Question

If there is no benefit to showing a 1099 g but it is costing me to include in my tax return, can i just delete it?

It depends on what the 1099-G is for. 

 

For example, if the amount is reported in box 2, it is a state or local tax refund, offset, or credit.  You only need to report it as federal income if you took a federal deduction for paying those taxes in a prior year (i.e., you itemized deductions in that year) and that deduction actually reduced your federal taxes. If instead, you took the standard deduction in that tax year, you don't need to include the 1099-G on your tax return.  Box 3 of the form will indicate the relevant tax year.

 

Refer to this TurboTax article about Form 1099-G for more information, including what is reported in the other boxes of Form 1099-G.  Once you figure out what the payment was for, you can figure out if it needs to be included on your 2019 tax return.
