If you are retired military, the pension is nonqualified.

 

A qualified plan is an employer-sponsored retirement plan that qualifies for special tax treatment under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. Examples of qualified plans include 401(k) plans, 403(b) plans, profit-sharing plans, and Keogh (HR-10) plans.
