It is not letting me put "unknown" in the social security value for spouse information

Where are you seeing a spot to enter "unknown" for a SSA1099?  Are you trying to enter a SSA1099 as a 1099R?

Go to Federal> Wages & Income>>Retirement Plans and Social Security  (SSA1099 and 1099RRB) to enter your SSA1099.

Please clarify your question.
