Question

It is saying I cannot file electronically because lines in my 1040 are blank. But I do not have a W2 or a 1040 as I am retired. How do I fix this?

If you are retired then what type of income are you receiving?  Social Security benefits reported on a SSA-1099?  Or retirement/pension payments reported on a Form 1099-R?

Social Security Retirement/Disability/Survivors benefits are reported on a form SSA-1099 and the benefits received are reported on a federal tax return. The benefits may be taxable depending on the amount of other income you have entered on your tax return.
However, if the Social Security benefits are the Only income to be reported on the tax return, then there is no reason or need to file a tax return.

To enter Social Security benefits reported on form SSA-1099

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • On Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099), click the start or update button

Or enter ssa-1099 in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ssa-1099

To enter, edit or delete a form 1099-R -

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • On IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), click the start or update button

Or enter 1099-r in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to 1099-R

Take note that you can not file a ZERO income tax return. The IRS says so.

If you have other income, just no W-2, then you *must* elect to start/update the Wages & Salaires section and select the option for "I don't have any W-2's". Until you do that, the program will *INSIST* that you have one entered in order to e-file.
