Question

Line 5a is not including taxable income from 1099R for RMDs from Traditional IRAs

I have entered the 1099R info and answered related questions.  The amount in box 1 and 2(taxable income) is the RMD for the year.  Yet, this total does not flow to line 5A on 1040.  Turbotax is excluding this amount from taxable income for some reason yet it is a required distribution from an IRA account.

Taxable retirement account distributions are listed on line 5b.  When there is no difference between the totals of Box 1 and Box 2 on the 1099-R forms, line 5a is left blank.

Please confirm that your income is showing on line 5b, and if not please let us know so that we can assist further with troubleshooting.

Your post shows the distribution was from a Traditional IRA.  If that is correct then you should have checked the box on the Form 1099-R for IRA/SEP/SIMPLE.  This would then have the distribution amount on Line 4a of the form 1040 and the taxable amount on Line 4b.

But IRA distributions don’t go on line 5.   IRA goes on lines 4a and 4b.
