Question

Living in the state of Iowa, my 1099R for military retirement pay should be exempt from Iowa taxes. It is not showing up as such. What can I do about this?

When you first start your Iowa return, your military retirement will show as taxable.

As you proceed with your return, you will reach the screen Iowa Taxable Retirement Income. See the screenshot below.  You will be able to indicate that you are retired from the military, and on the next screen, you can enter the Pensions and Annuities Not Taxable to Iowa.
