For the Missouri public pension exclusion, which include Public Teacher's Retirement, you will answer questions in the Federal portion of your return which will carry over to the MO state return.

Please follow these steps:

  • Once in your return, click on Federal Taxes tab and choose Wages & Incomes
  • Click on Edit next to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)
  • Click Edit next to your pension
  • Continue through to Where Is This Distribution From? screen, choose Public Pension, and make sure amount in Missouri Distribution amount matches the taxable amount of your pension (1099-R box 2a). (see screen shot)

Note:  Make certain to work through all the screens after the 1099-R entry screen.

@jlstirm

make sure the MO state distribution amount is entered as what's in box 2a of your 1099-R form (as long as box 2a has a non-zero value in it)....otherwise the Federally-taxable amount from box 1 would be used.
