Question

My 1099-R shows the taxable amount as undetermined, though I asked for about 20% to be withheld pre-distribution. How do I determine the taxable amount?

Box 2a is blank and both check boxes in 2b are checked: "Taxable amount not determined" [X]

The taxable amount will be calculated by TurboTax based on your answers to some follow-up questions after you enter the Form 1099-R into your return.  Enter the Form 1099-R exactly as it was reported to you.  Since box 2a is blank, leave it blank in your return and check the boxes in 2b.

Use these steps to go to the Form 1099-R section of your return to enter your information:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “1099-R” and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-R
  • Click on the blue “Jump to 1099-R” link
