My dad passed on Sept 2016, he always filed a join return with my Mom. Does she need to report the social security benefits that he received in 2016 before he passed?

Although your Mother is not obligated to file Married Filing Jointly, if that is how she has filed in the past, she may file Married Filing Jointly for 2016.

Everything for 2016 would be reported.

The date of your father's passing must also be reported on the return for IRS records.

Next year her filing status will change, depending on her circumstances.
