Question

My employer incorrectly indicated I was living and working in different states, meaning I was taxed in a state I should not have been. How can I get my money back?

If you did not live or earn money in Maryland, then you would have to file a nonresident return for the state to get a refund of erroneous state taxes paid. This nonresident return will be in addition to the Massachusetts resident return you have to file.

Per the State of Maryland, nonresidents only have a withholding requirement if the wages paid as compensation are for services rendered in the Maryland or for services rendered while teleworking in Maryland.

After you complete your federal return, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Click on State on the left hand side.
  2. Add the state of Maryland as a non-resident.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. During the state interview screen, it will prompt you to enter your Maryland sourced wages. Please enter $0 if you earned no wages in the State of Maryland.
