Question

My father passed away in February and we received his 401k. we paid taxes on it before we received it. should I get a form for this?

You should receive a Form 1099-R from the trustee covering this distribution.  Be sure that the code in Box 7 is "4" to avoid penalty issues.

And just so there is no later confusion, you did not "pay" the tax on this distribution.  You had a certain amount of tax withheld on the distribution, much like the withholding that is done on a regular paycheck.  That withholding will be shown in Box 4 of the Form 1099-R and you will get credit for it on your return just like you get credit for your payroll withholding.
