My Form CSA 1099-R has an amount listed in box 9b. Total Employee Contributions. Is that amount taxable?

I'm wondering if I should deduct that amount from my taxable amount in box 2a.

No. You should enter Form CSA as it is shown.  

 

Part of the confusion regarding Box 5 on IRS Form CSA 1099-R comes from the title the IRS has assigned to the box: “Employee contributions or insurance premiums.” Some people think that these amounts are being deducted from their distribution or that it is about about insurance. However, the amount shown in Box 5 is not a deduction. Box 1 shows everything paid to you last year. Of that amount, Box 2a is the taxable portion, and Box 5 is the portion that is not taxable.
