My last name is longer than 20 characters, but turbotax has a limit of 20 characters for this field. This info is translated into filing the tax return. please help fixit

Generally, a last name that is too long to fit in the box will not cause an issue as the IRS and many states use your SSN and the first 4 letters of your last name. So, if your last name is too long, then you should still be fine.

However, if for some reason it does reject due to missing the last letter of your name, you will need to print and mail your return. Before you mail it, you can handwrite the missing letter on your form. Also, be sure you do not have any extra spaces or characters in the last name box...such as a space in front of the start of your name.

Thank you so much for the answer. In my tax return for last year, I went through a different institution where my full last name is printed. Will this cause a potential rejection?

Having a mismatch from your return last year where your full name was printed versus this year where it is potentially shorted should not cause a potential rejection.

As stated by Vanessa A, the Social Security number and the first few digits of your last name are used to verify who is filing the return.
