Question

My mother's pension and social security income goes to medicaid-she is left with only a small portion of money. Does she still have to file taxes?

Up to 85% of Social Security Retirement/Disability/Survivors benefits becomes taxable when all your other income plus 1/2 your social security reaches:

Married Filing Jointly - $32,000
Single or Head of Household - $25,000
Married Filing Separately - 0

If her taxable pension income plus 1/2 of the Social Security benefits is less than the amount shown for her filing status she does not have to file a tax return.

Unless she had taxes withheld from the pension, then she should file to get a refund for the taxes withheld.
