Question

My unemployment records say no benefits were payed to me for the prior calender year, but I was payed benefits in 2020, do I file them this year, or next?

You file them the year you got paid.  So if you got it in 2020 it goes on your 2020 tax return that we are filling out now in 2021.

The unemployment you received in 2020 goes on your 2020 tax return, just like any other income you received in 2020.

 

Unemployment compensation is taxable on your federal return.  Enter your 1099G for unemployment in Federal>Wages and Income>Unemployment

Go through the screens very carefully to enter any federal/state tax you had withheld from the unemployment

You might need to get your 1099G from the state’s unemployment site when it becomes available in January.  You will need to use the same password etc that you use to certify for weekly benefits

If you are seeing that on your State's unemployment website, and you did receive unemployment $$ in 2020....then it's quite possible that they don't have their 2020 data ready yet.  Check again in early February.
