You are entering your 1099-G in the wrong place. Your 1099-G with an amount in box 2 is for a state or local income tax refund, but you are in the TurboTax topic for entering unemployment benefits. There is a separate topic for state and local tax refunds. Follow the steps below to enter your 1099-G for a state or local income tax refund.

  • In the Search box type "state and local tax refund" without the quotes. Then click the link that says "Jump to state and local tax refund."
  • The first screen asks "Do you have any of these types of income?" The first item listed is "State and local tax refunds received in 2020." Click Yes.
  • On the next screen, check the first box, "State or local tax refunds." Click Continue.
  • The next screen asks "Did You Get a State or Local Tax Refund in 2020?" Click Yes.
  • On the next screen, "Tell us about your refund," enter the requested information. Then proceed through the subsequent questions.
