Question

On one of my 1099-R I have $14516.28 in total dist. and $4769.33 in taxable amt. On the checking the total for taxable as $14516.28. Why are you using the total amt instead of the taxable amt to be taxed?

The Taxable amount from the Form 1099-R Box 2a should be entered on your Form 1040 Line 4b or 5b, depending on the type of retirement plan.

    Look at your Form 1040.

Using the desktop editions click on Forms.  When is Forms mode click on the Form 1040 on the left side of the screen to open the form.

You should see the Gross Distribution Amount on Form 1040, Line 4a or Line 5a (depending on type of retirement plan), and the Taxable Amount should show on Line 5b or 4b.

If your Form 1040 is not correct, type '1099-R' in the Search area, then click on 'Jump to 1099-r' to get to this section.

EDIT your 1099-R and the follow-up questions as needed.  If you imported your 1099-R, you could delete it and enter it manually.
