Part of the stimulus deal was for the government to add extra money to our unemployment why am I being taxed for that compensation?

Unemployment is taxable income.   When Congress passed that law that gave you the extra unemployment they did not do anything to make it tax-free.  Unemployment is taxable on your federal return and on many state returns.  Sorry.
