Public Pension Subtraction on Schedule M1M Minnesota

Does my CSRS Federal retirement pension plan qualify as a Pension Plan qualifying for a subtraction on Minnesota's M1M Schedule since I did not pay into Social Security the whole 36 1/2 years I worked in the Federal government? I was able to receive some Social Security benefit payments at age 72 on what I earned in self employment jobs (in which I did pay into Social Security) before working in the Federal government. Thank you for any clarification on this.

Yes, Federal CSRS retirement benefits qualify for the Minnesota subtraction from income, since the related service didn't earn you Social Security benefits.

From this Minnesota DOR webpage:

Payments from these non-Minnesota pension plans may also qualify:

  • Any federal government plan based on service for which you did not earn Social Security benefits
