I am a railroad employee. I have worked the full year with the railroad no other jobs to be claimed on my returned. On my W-2 box 14 list

EX OT WAGE

TIER 1A

TIER1B

TIER II

The only code in box 12 is DD not D.

What is the difference between TIER 1A and TIER 1B? All research I have done says there is only Tier 1 and Tier 2 (II) I have not found anything about a sub category for TIER 1.

There is no Tier 1A and 1B.  Perhaps your employer has broken out the two pieces of the 7.65% Tier 1 withholding, which is 6.2% for retirement and 1.45% for Medicare.  Calculate the percentages of the entries for 1a and 1b and if they are 6.2% and 1.45%, that is what they did.  Your not going to find a Tier 1a and Tier 1b option in the W-2  box 14 entry in TurboTax, or any other tax prep software for that matter.  You should add the two together as enter as a single entry.

You can also ask your employer's payroll department what Tier 1a and 1b is - they should know.
