Re. state tax, I'm prompted to enter $ for CT-1040 Resident Income Tax Return Wages, Tips, Etc. Do I enter the amt on my sole 2020 1099-R form box 1 (gross distribution)?

Your form 1099-R does not report wage income, so you wouldn't enter anything there if all you had was pension income.
