Question

Should the state have a 1099-G for us?

We have a schedule A for 2023 and there is an amount listed in box 5 for state income tax. I've reached out to both CT and NY and both have advised they don't have a 1099-G for us. To my understanding we need to report those state returns from last year as part of our income this year. I'm not sure what to do moving forward.

Yes, if you received a 2023 state refund in 2024, that might be reportable income on your 2024 federal return if you itemized on your 2023 federal return.

Just because you deducted state tax paid on your previous year (2023) federal tax return does not mean you received a state refund.

I suggest you look at your 2023 state return(s) to see if you were owed a refund FIRST.

IF YES, you were due a refund, look for that 1099-G.

IF NO, you were not due a state refund, the matter is closed.
