Question

SSI (Social Security Disability) on TurboTax

I cannot find actual SSI (Social Security Disability) on TurboTax. I don't get a form for SSI (it is SSI, not SSDI). If it isn't counted on my taxes for 2022, I won't be able to get insurance benefits next year.

I appreciate any help!

Thank you!

You do not enter SSI on an income tax return.   SSI and Social Security  Disability are not the same thing.   If you receive Social Security  disability benefits they send you a SSA1099 for it.  There is no tax form or document sent to you for SSI because you just do not enter it on a tax return ever.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS AND SSI?

SSI is Supplemental Security Income and is not from the Social Security Administration. It is designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income; and. It provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. SSI is not reported on a tax return.

Social Security Retirement/Disability/Survivors benefits are reported on a form SSA-1099 and the benefits received are to be entered on a federal tax return. The benefits may be taxable depending on the amount of other income you have entered on your tax return.
However, if the Social Security benefits are the Only income to be reported on the tax return, then there is no reason or need to file a tax return.

To enter Social Security benefits reported on form SSA-1099

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
On Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099), click the start or update button

Or enter ssa-1099 in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ssa-1099

Up to 85% of Social Security Retirement/Disability/Survivors benefits becomes taxable when all your other income plus 1/2 your social security reaches:

    • Married Filing Jointly - $32,000
    • Single or Head of Household - $25,000
    • Married Filing Separately - 0

Although the program is administered by the Social Security Administration, SSI is Supplemental Security Income, not "Social Security Disability."  SSI is not taxable, not reportable on your tax return and is not to be entered anywhere in TurboTax.

Did you get it for the prior year 2021?  Did it show up on your 2021 tax return line 6a and 6b?  If it's on your tax return it is Social Security and not ssi.
