Question

Tax Year Prior to 2020: I plan on helping to family members that live on social security do their taxes this year do you have to claim medical expenses or that not change anything

You are not required to claim medical expenses on the return. In fact, with the new standard deduction doubling, most tax payers are not able to claim their medical expenses since it must be more than 7.5% of your adjusted gross income.
