You report any and all 1099-Rs that you get. It doesn't matter whether tax was withheld or not, you report them all.

You may need to enter your 1099-R manually if importing it doesn't work.

You'll get a 1099-R if you received $10 or more from a retirement plan. Here's how to enter your 1099-R in TurboTax:

  1. Open (continue) return if you don't already have it open.
  2. Inside TurboTax, search for 1099-R and select the Jump to link in the search results.
  3. Answer Yes on the Your 1099-R screen, then select Continue.
    • If you land on the Your 1099-R Entries screen instead, select Add Another 1099-R.
  4. Select how you want to enter your 1099-R (import or type it in yourself) and then follow the instructions. You can add up to 20 1099-Rs.

You may enter the 1099-R by these steps:

After you sign in to Turbotax,

  • Select Federal
  • Click on the Income Section
  • Scroll to Retirement Income
  • Select Form 1099-R
  • You should see "Tell Us Which 1009-R You Have"
  • Select "CSA-1099-R

Same problem as others. It says the government is not ready for 1099R, should be ready by 1/20/2020. It is now March, I have updated my copy of Deluxe Turbo Tax. Surely Turbo Tax can correct this problem with entering 1099R by now. I have used TT for years and never had a problem like this.

There is no problem filing 1099-R's.   If you are using the desktop software then you need to update or apply the manual update if using a Windows computer..

Here is the best method for entering your 1099R and get past the pick institution part.

  1. Log into turbo tax
  2. Go to federal>income and expenses
  3. Retirement plans and Social Security>show more
  4. Ira (401K), pension plan Withdrawals(1099R) Start
  5. When it asks Let's import your tax info indicate that you wish to change how you enter the form.
  6. Next question asks How do you want to add your 1099‑R? you can indicate that you will type it in yourself.
  7. Then it asks Who gave you a 1099-R? Here you would mention it's from a financial institution.
  8. Next screen will allow you to enter the 1099-R exactly the way it is listed on the form.

Yes, you must report all your income.

You'll get a 1099-R if you received $10 or more from a retirement plan. Here's how to enter your 1099-R in TurboTax:

  1. Open (continue) return if you don't already have it open.
  2. Inside TurboTax, search for 1099-R and select the Jump to link in the search results.
  3. Answer Yes on the Did you get a 1099-R? screen.
    • If you land on the Your 1099-R Entries screen instead, select Add Another 1099-R.
  4. Select which option matches your form and Continue.
  5. You can import your form directly from your financial institution by searching or selecting yours from one of the options on the screen. You'll be prompted to enter your financial institution account information, and TurboTax will directly import your forms.
    • If you prefer to type it in yourself, select Change how I enter my form and continue through.

I have a 1099-R form that I want to submit manually I don't have a sign-in to the financial institution because I chose not to establish it. Is there any way I can do this?

Also there is canadian union pension with an NR4 form.

Otherwise a simple return. Can I use Turbo Tax for this?

Click the following to enter your 1099-R:

  • Federal
  • Wages and Income
  • Scroll down and click Show More next to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • Start next to IRA, 401K, Pension Plans (1099-R)

As to whether or not you have to enter it, that depends on your income.  If you have enough income that you are required to file a return, then yes, you will need to enter the 1099-R.  Retirement income is generally taxable by the IRS.

I have a former employer pension distribution reported on 1099-R. I filled all data asked. Now TurboTax shows Form 4852 questions. On line 4, it checked box "I have been unable to obtain 1099-R". It can't be unchecked. Why it assumes this and wants to substitute 1099-R with form 4852?  This form asks questions like "how did you determine the amounts in lines 7 (W-2 related) and 8 above", "explain your efforts to obtain form W-2, form 1099-R.....". I received 1099-R in mail, I don't have W-2 at all.  It doesn't seem right? How may I accomplish this?
