Question

There is an error in Virginia's Military Benefits subtraction. The age limit of 55 was removed starting tax year 2024 (for filing in 2025). How do I report this error?

This is directly from the Virginia tax page. "How old do I have to be to claim the Military Benefits Subtraction? You must be 55 or older. Beginning with taxable year 2024 (returns usually filed in 2025,) you can subtract these benefits regardless of your age. "

There are a lot of VA forms that are not yet ready.

Forgot to add I'm under 55 so Turbotax will not let me claim this even though the age limit was removed.

I noticed the error as well and submitted a request to update it.  I chatted with someone.  Recommend you doing the same as I figure the more who let them know the law changed the better.

This was my understanding as well, that the age requirement (55 or older) was removed. I'm not filing my taxes until I get a solid answer on this.

I just got an email from TurboTax stating my Virginia return was rejected due to an error in their software under military benefits (I am under 55 years old). The email told me to sign into my TurboTax where they had already corrected the error and I just had to re E-sign my Virginia state return and resubmit it. I didn't have to correct anything the system software had already done it for me and I did NOT have to repay to do so. Hopefully it is all fixed now and I don't have to worry about issues in the future.

I keep getting the same error code but I'm not even in the military or claimed the benefit. I tried to follow the instructions to fix it but it keeps looping back around from refund instructions step to and 3 and going back to the same thing.

Following, as I fall in the same boat.

Thanks for posting this.  I am in the same boat.  To date, I have made 3 phone calls…resulted in the customer service rep telling me to post on this forum.  Made no sense, so sent in formal feedback (with screenshots) via website.  I also chatted via FB messenger….super friendly but after 6 exchanges, she acted like i was a one off and wanted to know if I would upgrade so I could get appropriate help.  It is early in the tax season, so hopefully they will get this fixed soonest.  Keep the pressure on!

I know it's a "janky" way to do it and not sure if it will pass the tax check at the end, but I tried going into the FORMS and inputted the $30k manually, so at least i can estimate how it would affect my taxes. Won't know till much later if it will work or it will get flagged. I at least can see the estimate at this time. Hoping the powers that be see this and other topics to get this straightened out before filing time. Thanks for posting and keep it up to date!
