Question

Turbotax keeps sending me to a Check this entry screen/Pension Deduction Worksheet for my Michigan taxes re Covid19 401k withdrawal. Why wont it let me correct it?

I'm trying to e-file and all info was transferred from federal return to my Michigan return, so I'm not understanding why it keeps telling me to "fix it."

Same exact problem for me, felt like I was waiting forever for them to add the proper covid pension form to file federal, and now I still can't file because of this state nonsense. PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP, might just try and re-fill everything out with another software if turbotax keeps having these issues...

Arizona state forms are not working either.  I update to state pension in TT and when I return to it, the federal pension box is marked again.

@Mermaid2

Some of those selection boxes provide exactly the same exemption of the distribution from state taxes.

Yeah...the bullet point may reset...but it's the same exemption on the state forms.

Yeah #2:  Wish TTX would figure a way to keep the bullet point so it stops confusing people.

Same issue here, it says the forms are not updated but they were supposed to be finished yesterday from what I understood.  Is anybody from TT working on this.

February 26, 2021

Same on Wisconsin. It keeps being blamed on the federal form, and every day we're being told it will be fixed "tomorrow".

Form 8915-E is available in both the CD/Download and online versions of TurboTax.  If you are using the online version or after you have updated the CD/Download version be sure to go back through the 1099-R section in the federal return.

In the screens following the 1099-R entry screen:

  • You will see a series of questions to see if you are exempt from the additional taxes on early withdrawals [Screenshot #1, below]; and
  • You will  be asked if you want to pay all the tax this year of just 1/3, with the rest reported over the next two years. [Screenshot #2]  Check the box if want to pay tax on the entire retirement distribution in 2020.

Then proceed to your state return.

I had already done this correctly as you showed here, and had no issues with the federal portion, but when I got to the end of state filing (MI) it said that I needed to fix something and took me to a page about pension distributions where there was nothing to change.  At the top it said some state forms relating to covid 19 withdrawals were not available yet.  Again ... this is not an issue with answering the 8915e questions in the federal portion because I started fresh today from the beginning with no previous information saved.  I ended up just efiling federal and will have to wait for the state portion to be fixed I guess.

Im in NY and having the same issue too. This needs to be fixed asap.

February 27, 2021

I am also having issues. I cannot e-file the federal tax and state tax separately. When will this error be fixed?

March 3, 2021

I (from Michigan) am having the same issue as everyone else ... Except Turbo Tax accepted payment from me BEFORE telling me it could NOT file my MI state return via efile.  So, now I am stuck waiting for Turbo Tax as I paid already!

March 3, 2021

Yep same here....didnt hesitate to take my money.  Hope this gets fixed soon.

March 4, 2021

Same here. I thought for a brief second of deleting and filing the state and federal separately and then remember... oh wait I already paid.
Very frustrating!

It would be good customer service Turbo Tax to update us when this is fixed!!!  We paid you for the program ...it should be up to you to notify us or at least give us an eta.  The error for Michigan is not a crazy error please fix so we can file our taxes!! Thank you

March 11, 2021

I was finally able to e-file state today (3/10) MI state return. So at least for Michigan it looks like the issue has been fixed

March 11, 2021

NYS updates are in.  I was able to e-file both Federal and NY State just now.  I also heard that Michigan is fixed.

March 12, 2021

One error fixed...and now some of us have a new error! Now it won't efile STATE without the federal. I already filed the Federal. Now it won't let me get past the new error!!! For goodness sake turbo tax....

March 15, 2021

I am having this issue as well for Alabama. I e-filed both federal and state at the beginning of March using the online version. Federal was accepted within two days on March 5th. State bounced back March 7th with an ‘action needed’ email but when I looked at the error, it said it was going to be fixed with an update scheduled for March 11th. I have been checking every day since and keep getting the same error. I talked with someone in support and they could not really give me any helpful info. I really want to be done with 2020 taxes! I don’t know what else to do except wait on TT, I’ve gotten the message that I can file by mail but when I walk through the steps for possibly doing that I get a warning about the 8915-e form not being ready, so I don’t want to mail it in and then have a problem anyways.

March 15, 2021

Same issue for NY state. My federal filing has the 8915-E in it, so I don't see why there's a hold up with the state filing. Must be a TurboTax bug and they're just blaming on the form not being ready.

March 15, 2021

My error is when I go to file the New York state return, the program says you must select the Federal return also. I've already filed the federal return and there is no place to select it again. Nothing about missing forms.
