Hello,

I received a 2024 w-2 for a job that I haven’t worked at in 4 years.  There’s no earnings. And everything’s 0.   But the box 13 is checked. This is the first time this has happened. I haven’t paid into my retirement plan at all since I worked there. It just sits there.  What do I do?

Assuming the box checked in Box 13 is the "Retirement Plan" box, this indicates you were an active participant in a retirement plan during the year,

Here are some steps you can take:

    1. Contact HR or Payroll: Clarify why you received this W-2 form and why Box 13 is checked.
    2. Plan Update: If it's just a plan update, no action is needed.
    3. Error: If it's an error, request a corrected W-2.

Since all boxes are zero, you likely don't need to report this on your income—no income generally means no tax effect—but keep the W-2 for your records.
