The withdrawal from the IRA and the Form 1099-R is entered as received.  If there was federal taxes withheld on the 1099-R in box 4 of the form, those taxes are entered on your federal tax return as a tax payment.

The gross amount and the taxable amount of the distribution are entered on Form 1040 Line 4a and Line 4b.

Make sure that you check the box on the TurboTax Form 1099-R for IRA/SEP/SIMPLE.

If you are on the screen in the 1099-R section that says, "Enter your details", you will notice Box 4 Federal income tax withheld. This is not entered on Form 8606.

Here's how to enter your 1099-R:

  1. Open (continue) your return if you don't already have it open
  2. Search for 1099-R and select the Jump to link in the search results
  3. Answer Yes on the Did you get a 1099-R? screen
    • If you land on the Review your 1099-R info screen instead, select Add Another 1099-R

If the taxable amount on 1040 box 4b is the same as the gross then box 4a will be blank.    See line 4 on my return.
