Where are you seeing this? I can only think of two things; the saver's credit or the $3,000 exclusion for Public Safety Officers.

If your income is under a certain amount and you meet other qualifications, you can receive a credit for your retirement contribution.

Retired PSOs can exclude up to $3,000 of their retirement income, if the money was used towards health or long-term care insurance premiums.

.......either that or you are maybe referring to a "state" retirement income deduction?

But that might only apply if you are actually retired, and now getting retirement/pension income

IF so, you'd have to let us know which state is involved before anyone could comment/help.
