Question

What is the joint filing limit on an IRA? I was told $12,000 but turbotax is telling me I'm over the limit at 9,000? Should I ignore turbotax?

We have one income contributing to a Roth IRA and a traditional IRA.

IRAs are individual accounts, not joint accounts, so an individual's IRA contributions (traditional and Roth combined) are subject to individual limitations.  Provided there is sufficient supporting compensation, each spouse under age 50 in 2023 can contribute for 2023 a maximum of $6,500, $7,500 if age 50 or over.

In the case of a spousal IRA contribution by a spouse who has little or no compensation, as long as the spouses file a joint tax return, the spouse with the lower compensation can support the contribution to that spouse's IRA using the compensation of the higher compensated spouse as long as the total contributions for the two spouses does not exceed the combined compensation.
