Where do I find the amount on my 1099-R to enter for the Allowable US Armed Forces retirement benefit deduction?

You will find the amount in box 16 state distribution of your Form 1099-R from DFAS.

Please make sure you select "United States Armed Forces retirement benefits" on the "Where is your distribution from?" screen when you enter your 1099-R in the federal interview:

Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1099-R”
Click on “Jump to 1099-R”
Enter your 1099-R
On the "Where is your distribution from?" screen select "United States Armed Forces retirement benefits"

Then during your NC state interview enter the amount on the "Retirement Benefits Received by a Member of the U.S. Armed Forces" screen

Click "State" on the left
Start your state return
Continue through the questions until the "Retirement Benefits Received by a Member of the U.S. Armed Forces" screen and enter the amount from box 16 of your DFAS Form 1099-R.
