I assume this is for a state return? If so, please tell us which state. Remember that we in the Community cannot see your screen nor your private tax data.

The state is NC.

You will find the amount in box 16 state distribution of your Form 1099-R from DFAS.

Please make sure you select "United States Armed Forces retirement benefits" on the "Where is your distribution from?" screen when you enter your 1099-R in the federal interview:

  1. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1099-R”
  2. Click on “Jump to 1099-R”
  3. Enter your 1099-R
  4. On the "Where is your distribution from?" screen select "United States Armed Forces retirement benefits"

Then during your NC state interview enter the amount on the "Retirement Benefits Received by a Member of the U.S. Armed Forces" screen

  1. Click "State" on the left
  2. Start your state return
  3. Continue through the questions until the "Retirement Benefits Received by a Member of the U.S. Armed Forces" screen and enter the amount from box 16 of your DFAS Form 1099-R.
