Question

Where do I find the section in TT to post Form 1099-NEC? I received proceeds from company stocks and dividends after I retired.

To enter the 1099-NEC for stock proceeds and ensure it is not counted as self-employment income in TurboTax, follow these steps:

    1. Go to the search bar by clicking the magnifying glass icon at the top of the TurboTax screen.
    2. Type "1099-NEC" in the search bar and press Enter.
    3. Click the "Jump to 1099-NEC" link in the search results.
    4. Enter the details from your 1099-NEC form.
    5. Continue through and say the work does NOT involve work that is like your main job
    6. Select the years you received it
    7. Say no, to did this involve an intent to earn money

There were no prompts in TT for items 5-7 in your response.  There was a screen that asks: "What type of income is on your 1099-NEC?"  None of the options listed apply to my situation.  On the back of Form 1099-NEC, it says that if you are not an employee, it is income from a sporadic activity or a hobby.  One of the options does list "Hobby," but that seems like an inaccurate choice.  Do you think that since nothing else apples, "Hobby" would be the appropriate selection?

@marvingee_02090 After you entered the income on the Form 1099-NEC, the following screen asked you a series of questions.  On the screen Do one of these uncommon situations apply?  There is a statement that you should have selected - This is not money earned as an employee or self-employed individual, it is from sporadic activity or hobby

This would have put the amount entered on the Form 1099-NEC on Schedule 1 Line 8z.  The total from Schedule 1 Line 10 flows to the Form 1040 Line 9 as ordinary income.
