Solved

Why does TurboTax say my state refund will be more than I paid to the state? I am retired, so there's no withholding, only what I submitted as estimated payments.

I can see details of my federal refund calculation, but not the state.

There are several possibilities for your state refund to be greater than anticipated. You may have paid in more estimated taxes than you were required or depending on your state you could have been entitled to some refundable tax credits.

Refundable tax credits are called “refundable” because if you qualify for a refundable credit and the amount of the credit is larger than the tax you owe, you will receive a refund for the difference.

For example, if you owe $800 in taxes and qualify for a $1,000 refundable credit, you will receive a $200 refund.

Check your entries to make sure they are correct.

You can view your state return in Turbo Tax as follows:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account
  2. Click on Tax Home
  3. Scroll to bottom of page
  4. Click on Add a State (we're not really going to add anything, we just need to be able to do the next step)
  5. Click on Tax tools (left menu)
  6. Click on Print Center
  7. Click on Print, save or preview this year's return
  8. Put a check mark in the box for Federal Returns and State Returns (if you have one, or more).
  9. Click Include government and TurboTax worksheets
  10. Click View or print forms
  11. A new window will open that will give you the option to download and/or print.   This will include all forms and worksheets.

Thanks.  Refundable tax credits was it.  Never qualified for those, and didn't notice the "you may be eligible for a credit" comments when answering the credit questions.  As for how to see how the state refund was calculated, I can't seem to do the print previewing you describe until I pay and file.  It was going back through the credits and deductions questions that confirmed refundable tax credits.  Thanks again.

If you haven't paid, or filed your return, you can go back into the return and view a summary of your state tax return.

  1. On the menu bar on the left that shows.
    1. My Info
    2. Federal
    3. State
    4. Review
    5. File
  2. Select Tax Tools
  3. On the drop-down select Tools
  4. On the popup menu
  5. Select View Tax Summary
  6. On the left sidebar

Select your state.
