Question

Why is my recovery rebate credit being calculated wrong? I never received the amount for my dependent during the first stimulus although she was on my 2019 Tax Return.

I received nothing for the second stimulus amount and had a child 12/28/19 but, it’s only giving me $600 for the second stimulus amount.

Assuming you have entered a dependent child age 16 or under on your 2020 tax return and that child qualifies for the child tax credit, your Recovery Rebate Credit would be calculated as:

Round one:  1200 (2400 if joint filer) plus 1 child 500  Total:   1700

Round two:    600 (1200 if joint filer) plus 1 child 600   Total:  1200

Total credit due $2900; from that amount you would subtract any amounts received in rounds one and/or two.  The remainder will be added to your tax return as a credit.

Here is a link with more information on the Recovery Rebate Credit.

Yes I was suppose to get 1700 first round but, only received 1200. I haven’t received anything for the second round. Therefore I should be receiving 500 from stimulus 1 for my dependent that I claimed. Then, 600 for myself and 600 for my dependent making it a total of 1700 in recovery rebate credit but, your system is only calculating 600 for me and adding it to my return. My income is way less than what I made in 2019. I made a little over 33,000.00 this year. It doesn’t let me put in what my amount should be either because when I do for the stimulus question it still turns around and calculates 600.00 only.

Make sure you entered your dependent information correctly. From your question, it seems TurboTax is not recognizing your dependent.

First, go to the TurboTax Personal Info screen and edit your child. Check these entries:

  1. On the Do You Have Children or Financially Support Another Person? screen, answer Yes.
  2. On the Who Do You Support? screen, answer one of the first two options.
  3. On the Tell Us About Your Child screen, enter and verify the information.
  4. On the Tell Us a Bit More About XXX, screen, make sure you enter the Citizenship status.
  5. On the How many months did XXX live with you in 2020? screen, make sure you entered "The whole Year"
  6. Make sure you go to the end of the dependent entry section of TurboTax.
