Question

Your "Learn More " tab for federal retirement benefits says I will be asked about service before 1991. However, I can't find where to enter the information.

If you enter your federal pension distribution in the 1099-R interview, when you get to the Oregon interview, you will quickly come to a screen with the heading: "IRA and Pension Distributions".

If the box is not yet checked for "We received federal pension income for federal service before October 1, 1991.", then please check it.

The next screen will just say that TurboTax will review your federal government service pension benefits. Hit Continue.

The next screen will read "Federal Pension Summary". Your pension should be listed there. Click on EDIT for your pension.

On the next screen enter either your work dates or your points. Note that if you enter the Date Work Began and hit Tab or otherwise move to the next box, TurboTax will calculate the number of points from the date you entered and 10/01/1991. The same is true for the ending date.

Or you can leave the dates empty and just enter the points, if you know them.

Continue, and you should see the updated summary, showing the amount of the pension deduction (i.e., the amount of the pension that was earned prior to October 1, 1991).

You're done with this.
