Car & Truck Expenses Worksheet

Anyone notice that the Car & Truck Expenses Worksheet Part I was changed and now the calculation for Percent of Business Use on line 9 doesn't compute? You now have to enter business miles Jan-Jun and Jul-Dec.  The form wording on the right side doesn't even accurately reflect the new breakdown.  When taking personal miles into consideration, it does not calculate an accurate %.  I had to override the percentage, so I'm anticipating not being able to efile.  Anyone else?

The reason you enter miles for each half of the year is because for Tax Year 2022, the Standard Mileage Rate changed in July.

There is another screen that asks if you documented business and personal miles.  If you enter the business mileage, the program does not need to compute a percentage in order to use the Standard Mileage rate, it is 58.5 from January through June and 62.5 July through December of 2022.

Please clarify if I am misunderstanding your question.

Thank you for your reply.  I don't need the percentage for using the standard mileage rate; I need the percentage for actual expenses.  Hence, the form needs to add the 2 separated mileages, take into consideration the personal miles and then determine percentage of business use.  This is what it's not doing. Does that make sense?

You are saying that the program is either not adding together the business miles from the 2 parts of the year or it is not dividing by the total miles.

We don't have any known issues with the calculation.

If you are using actual expenses rather than the standard deduction, your vehicle is being depreciated based on your business percentage use. You can look at form 4562 to see the depreciation amount each year.

Can you take a look through your forms and see where the breakdown is?

Also, are you using online or desktop?

If you are using the online version, you may have a piece of data stuck. If you are using the desktop, you may need to update your program.

If online:

A full or corrupted cache can cause problems in TurboTax, so sometimes you need to clear your cache (that is, remove these temporary files).

For stuck information follow these steps:

  1. Delete the mileage worksheet/form - not the business, see How to Delete
  2. Log out of your return and try one or more of the following:
    • Don't use Internet Explorer.
    • Clear cache and cookies,
    • Sign in using a different browser.
    • Sign in using a different device.
  3. Log back into your return.
    • Enter the form again.
