Question

I have a 1099-misc for income from our electric company because they expanded the substation by our house; how do I claim it and on what form?

I'm assuming your 1099-MISC has an amount in either Box 1 (Rent) or Box 3 (Other Income).

For Box 1 (Rent), you would report your income on Schedule E as rental income.  For Box 3 (Other Income), you would report your income on Line 8 of Schedule 1 of Form 1040.

Here’s how you would enter your 1099-MISC into TurboTax:

    1. Open or continue your return.
    2. Navigate to the 1099-MISC section:
      • TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to 1099-MISC.
      • TurboTax Desktop: Search for '1099-misc' and select the 'Jump to' link.
    3. Answer 'Yes' to 'Did you get a 1099-MISC?'
    4. Enter the information from your form into the corresponding boxes.
    5. Click 'Continue' to proceed.
