Question

I received a 1099-MISC Box 3 Other Income. It is NOT from a trade, business, self-employment. No work was done, and no effort to make a profit. Why does TT force Sch C?

The income is from a former employer that provides it as a benefit to retirees.

It depends, possibly on some of your answers. It's clear you did answer that it had nothing to do with work and I'll put the questions below just to confirm.

This income is not business income, rather miscellaneous as indicated by your Form 1099-MISC.

It's important for you to select 'None of these apply" and then you should also select the following:

'No' on the screen 'Did the '____' involve work that's like your main job?'

'No' on the screen 'Did the '____'  involve an intent to earn money?'

If you choose you can report the money as follows, just make sure to delete your 1099-MISC if you do.

Other Miscellaneous Income:  Go to the Wages and Income  section of TurboTax

  1. Scroll to  Less Common Income > Select  Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C
  2. Select Other reportable Income > Enter a description (----) and the amount

To Delete your Form 1099-MISC:

You'll need to delete this form --.
