I started a self-employed career in Real Estate midway through 2022, how do I enter my business expenses against that income?

If you are using an online version of TurboTax, you need to upgrade to TurboTax Self-Employed.

Self-employed income and expenses are reported on Schedule C, which is then included as part of your Federal Form 1040.

As mentioned by tagteam, if you are using TurboTax Online and you have self-employed expenses to claim, you will need to be using TurboTax Online Self-Employed.  If you are using one of the CD/downloaded versions of TurboTax, then any of these programs will contain all the forms you need.  The Home and Business version will give you the most guidance and help along the way.

To get started reporting your self-employed income and expenses, use the following steps:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “schedule c” and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to schedule c
  • Click on the blue “Jump to schedule c” link

Take a look at the following TurboTax help articles for some additional advice about filing a Schedule C and being self-employed:
