Is an internship considered self-employment or hobby when filing a 1099-NEC

I don't know how to categorize the type of income an internship is.

Yes, very often an Internship is reported on 1099-NEC and the reason is that the Payer does handle FICA withholding for you, therefore when you file 1099-NEC, you are forced to report Schedule C as Self-Employment income. Your FICA (Social Security) is then taken as "Self-Employment Tax".
