Question

Stipend - payroll taxes? On fellowship at US museum that pays a stipend; received 1099-NEC. I know it's taxable; confirming I owe no payroll tax (misc income / not SE).

I've read responses for similar posts that say stipends can be reported as misc income if intent is not to make $$$.  This is a research stipend.  Thanks very much.

Any portion of your fellowship that must be reported as income will be reported on Line 8 of Schedule 1. Please refer to IRS Topic No. 421 Scholarships, Fellowship Grants, and Other Grants for clarification.

Follow the instructions below to enter your fellowship income:

  1. Launch TurboTax
  2. Select Wages & Income
  3. Scroll down to Less Common Income (it’s at the bottom)
  4. Select start next to Miscellaneous income, 1099-A, 1099-C
  5. Select start next to Other reportable Income
  6. Enter Fellowship Income as the description and the amount of your fellowship income

Your fellowship income will be reported on Line 8 of Schedule 1 and will not be subject to self-employment taxes (Social security and Medicare).
