Yes, as long as you meet the criteria below.

If you've moved for school or work, you may be able to claim eligible moving expenses against your income.

Employees and self-employed individuals can deduct moving expenses from their employment or self-employment income earned at the new location. Students can only deduct moving expenses from the taxable portion of their awards (scholarships, fellowships, bursaries, certain prizes, or research grants), or from their employment income earned at the new location.

Note for couples: The CRA allows couples to split moving expenses. If you split expenses between you and your spouse, only claim the portion of expenses that your partner isn’t claiming. It’s usually beneficial for the higher-earning spouse claim all moving expenses.

Who's eligible to claim moving expenses?

You can claim moving expenses if you moved:

    • To work or run a business, or to study full-time at a university, college, or other post-secondary institution, and
    • At least 40 kilometres closer to your new work or school

Which moving expenses can be claimed?

You can claim reasonable amounts that you paid to move yourself, your family, and your household items. You may need documentation to support your claim, such as receipts. Eligible expenses include:

    • Transportation and storage costs
    • Travel expenses
    • Temporary living expenses (for up to 15 days) near your old and new homes
    • The cost of cancelling the lease for your old home
    • Incidental costs, such as changing your address on legal documents, replacing driving licences, and utility hook-ups and disconnections
    • The cost to maintain your old home when vacant (up to $5,000) after you moved, and while reasonable efforts were made to sell the home
    • The cost of selling your old home, including advertising, real estate commission, and mortgage penalty
    • The cost of buying the new home

Which moving expenses can’t be claimed?

    You can't claim:

    • Moving expenses for which you’ve been reimbursed by your employer
    • Expenses for work done to improve your old home for selling
    • Any loss from the sale of your home
    • Travel expenses for house-hunting or job hunting trips before your move
