Question

Self Employed + Basic Spouse

I spent a long while on the phone trying to address this issue and countless hours trying to file, but my problem was not solved.

I am trying to file online as self employed with a basic spouse return. The program is trying to charge for 2 self employed returns. I have not entered any business info for my spouse, only a t4. I did see this question pop up with a couple of other people. Any help?

I have tried filing separate and together. Importing and not importing my previous years information. Is it as simple as a discount code needing to be used?? I do not recall any issues last year.

Thank you

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble completing your return to your satisfaction, I hope this helps.

For TurboTax Online, it is not possible to re-enter the first stage of “My Info” where you are entering the initial personal information, the pages whether you state that you want to prepare the returns together and the following page where you enter the first names of the spouses.

If you are preparing you and your spouse's return together both income tax and benefit returns will be prepared under that price schedule.  If filing together, each package is designed to integrate the information from both spouses to obtain the best possible tax outcome, tools, advice and information for each spouse.

If you wish to have a different price schedule applied to your return than your spouse's you will have to elect to file separately and select a package that best suits your needs.  Note, that the fees for completing your return are considered a business expense. Also note that there are integrated advantages in completing your returns together within TurboTax, such as the Optimizers for medical expenses, pension splitting and charitable donations.

To prepare the returns separately, we recommend that you commence a new return, choosing the desired price schedule, and complete the following steps. First, you can still import the information from the prior year, however, at the initial pages after you iterate that you wish "transfer your personal information and other important details from last year's return" you must select “Myself” or “Someone else” and provide the first name of the individual. After this stage, you will be completing one individual return under that chosen price schedule. You will enter the spousal information at a later information stage within the profile section of “My Info”. You will then repeat the process for the other spouse.

TurboTax continues to offer Canadians a range of tax preparation products and prices to serve their needs. We thank you for your continued patronage and allowing TurboTax to satisfy you tax preparation needs.

This answer is not helpful.  It totally ignores that fact that a couple that needs to file together may have different filing requirements.  Only 1 spouse (with a business) should have to pay for the Self-Employed option.  Not both when the other spouse has no self-employed income or business.

We understand your frustration. Unfortunately, the only way to avoid this is to either not prepare the returns together or to file only yours and start a new return for your spouse. We apologize for any inconvenience to you.

I'm having the same issue, called and they said my spouse has to pay self employed too even though they aren't because I am.  Last year I filed together but was charged different prices.  I don't know if they changed it this year.  Did you figure it out?

Unfortunately, for 2019, there is no discount for a spouse’s return in any version of TurboTax Online. If you were preparing your returns together in TurboTax Online Self-Employed, both returns would cost the same amount. Even if neither of you are Self-Employed, since you are using the Self-Employed version, you both would be charged the full Self-Employed price.

So after hours of input I ran into the same situation as you, where it charges both spouses to file a Business Claim.  We cannot file separately due to Pension income splitting, medical expenses and all other credits.  I am absolutely frustrated, that because of a basic logic flaw by Intuit in the forms, I either have to re enter all the information or pay for 2 business TurboTax applications.  Customer Service keeps directing me to this same thread to get the solution.

In the "Order Summary" there should be an option to dispute charges or confirm that the charges are correct.

I just noticed this as well, spouse has basic income which could be filed for free but they are trying to charge another $45 on top of my self employment filing of $45 (Listing both of us as self employed at the end, which we are not).  That doesn't seem right at all. I've been using TurboTax for many years and have helped all my family do it through them as well.  Unfortunately, I will be seeking out different software to file taxes for this year and going forward until this is fixed.

In prior year's the spouse's Basic return was filed for $19.99, however, the self-employment package was more expensive. This Year's Self-employment Package is cheaper for $44.99 each and is applied if filed together. If you wish to choose the Basic return for your spouse, you will have to file separate returns and choose a Basic for your spouse when you start the return.

I hope this was helpful

Just wanted to say I am also not coming back to TurboTax because of this situation after using it for like 10 years. Lets pay for a higher priced item while not needing it because I am forced too!

Not pleased.
