Question

Son turned 18 last year. Made only 7900 in income and has 4500 in tuition fees. Can I still take him as a dependant? Do I take the tuition fees or does he?

As per our TurboTax article Who are Considered Dependants?   An eligible dependant varies based on the credit or deduction you want to claim. Many different people can qualify as dependants, and someone who qualifies as a dependant for the purposes of one credit may not qualify for another dependant credit.

You or your son can take the tuition credit if you paid for his tuition-free. If your child is pursuing post-secondary education, you may be able to deduct his tuition from your taxes. This often arises because your child doesn’t have enough taxable income to claim the full tuition credit in the current tax year.
