I received 1099-MISC from the university which is for the competition award. I studied in NY but reside in MI. Is this income taxed by both states?

It would be considered taxable income in your home state of Michigan.

It would also be considered taxable income in New York. However, if your gross income was under $4,000 or $3,100 if you are someone's dependent, you wouldn't be required to file a New York tax return because your income is so low.

If you have to file a New York return, your tax may be reduced for income earned in another state.
