On my 2024 w-2 in box 16is showing al wages and ga wages which are different totals. I worked in ga and lived in al. Is the al total wage the amount I owe to al for state taxes?

    No...as an AL resident  (All of 2024??)

     

    AL will assess a tax on ALL income, even the income from working in GA too.

    ....but, the Alabama forms will then allow you to take a credit for the taxes you had to pay to GA....that will usually cancel out the GA wages.  (only up-to the taxes that AL would have assessed, if GA tax rates are higher)

    But, in order for the state tax forms to do it correctly;

     

    1) Federal must be fully filled out, every scrap.  (don't have to file yet...just entirely completed with all income deductions and credits....everything)

    2) then the GA non-resident tax return must be done next.

    3) Finally you work on the AL tax return.
