Question

About the MN Tax Rebate Payment for 2021. Do I have to look back on my previous taxes? Is this something most leave blank?

It depends.  Some people did not receive the MN 2021 tax rebate when first issued and another round of checks were sent in 2023. If you received the rebate in 2023, you will get a form 1099-Misc for 2023 showing your rebate amount.

The rebate is taxable at the federal level in the year received.  Therefore, that form 1099-Misc will need to be entered in the Federal "Wages & Income" section using the "Other Common Income" dropdown to find the 1099-Misc topic.

Then, since the rebate is not taxable by MN, you will enter the same amount in the MN Tax Rebate box which will subtract the amount from MN taxable income.

If you did not receive a rebate check and subsequently a form 1099-Misc in 2023, you would leave the "MN Tax Rebate" box blank.
