Allocate New York State adjustments

I was a resident of New York City for the last three months of 2021. When preparing the NY state return (after preparing the federal) I came to an entry that said "Because your residence changed during 2021 you must allocate your New York State adjustments of -$64,122 based on the time you spent as a resident of New York City or Yonkers (I am not a Yonkers resident).  Below that statement are four empty "Description" boxes and then corresponding amount boxes adjacent to each.  It also says that "Your New York State adjustments must equal  -$64,122. " Question 1:  Where did the amount -64,122 come from? I don't know how to describe or how much to allocate to each item unless I know the source and I cannot find that amount or any accumulation items that equal that amount on any forms. Question 2; Is the amount shown somehow generated in software because I previously filled in the date I moved to NY? Please advise how to fill this out.

If you are experiencing this with your NYC return, it would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2021" file that is experiencing this issue in order to address your questions.

You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions: Go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.

    1. Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
    2. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
    3. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
    4. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is. Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.
    5. Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.

The $64,122 is the subtraction from federal adjusted gross income on your New York return (IT-203). It consists of:

    • $43,228 of social security benefits
    • $20,894 in the pension and annuity income exclusion

Out of this $64,122, you allocated $30,836 to New York City.

    • $9,942 of social security benefits
    • $20,894 in the pension and annuity income exclusion

To clear the error message, please follow the instruction below on the page Allocate New York State Adjustments:

    1. Enter total New York adjustments ($64,122) in first column
    2. Enter the NYC resident portion ($30,836) in second column

Hello - I am getting a similar message as other users where I am being told the following below.  I cannot figure out how the $1337 is being calculated so I am not able to allocate this.  Can someone please help?

Because your residence changed during 2022, you must allocate your New York State Adjustments of $1,337 based on the time you spent as a resident of New York City or Yonkers.  Your New York State Adjustments below must equal $1,337.

It all depends on the source of that negative 18000.

If the entire loss was because of New York sources then enter the entire 18000.

If the loss was partly due to New York and partly to wherever you ended up then divide the 18000 by 12 and multiply it by the number of months that you were in New York.

And if the loss was entirely because of stuff that happened after you moved out of New York then enter zero.

You will need to allocate the amount based on NY time. Please see answer above your question.

Thanks for getting back to me! I read the above thread already and still do not understand what numbers I use to make the calculation. I lived in NYC for half the year, but I still don’t understand how to proceed.

    Hello,

I moved to a new state in 2023. I need help with the same issue that others are having. I don't know where this number came from or what to write in the description box.

    My token is: 1218394

    Thanks in advance!

    Thank you for your token.

The 2,182 is self-employment tax. Since you allocated 100% to NYS on a previous screen, I allocated 100% to NYC as I assume you ran this business while a NYS resident.  I have attached a screenshot of the screen where you have to enter the allocation information.

Lastly, please change your NYC residency for 2023 from 01/01/2023 (not a 2022 date) to 10/01/2023. This will appear as an entry to be changed when you review the return.

I mostly just need help understanding what to put in the "description column" as it's not clear what this amount refers to in the tool. Thanks!

On the Allocate Federal Adjustments to Income screen, the $3,817 represents your health savings account. Since you lived in NYC for 5 months out of 12, I allocated 41.6% to the $3,817, assuming you contributed it evenly throughout the year. However, if you fully contributed to your health savings account while you were a NYC resident, then you would enter the full amount under the NYC column. If you contributed none while a NYC resident, then you would enter 0 under the NYC column.

Could you help with mine please?  I have a negative number and no idea where it came from after trying to add different amounts together.  I really wish it would tell you where it came from.

For the Allocate New York State Adjustments screen, you have to enter the following based upon your IT-203:

    • Description : INTEREST INCOME ON STATE/LOCAL BONDS           2,932 (Federal Amount)
    • Description: INTEREST INCOME ON US GOVT BONDS                    -393 (Federal Amount)
    • Description: FORM IT-225, LINE 18                                                  -10,000 (Federal Amount)

    This should equal -7,461.

The NYC resident column amount will be the allocation of the items while you were a NYC resident. For example, if the interest was earned entirely while a NYC resident, you would enter 2,932 in the NYC column. If earned evenly throughout the year, you would allocate based on the time period lived in NYC and the amount earned while a resident.

    Hello,

I am also experiencing something similar and would really appreciate some help. The message I got while working on my NY state return is as follows:

Because your residency changed during 2024, you must allocate your federal adjustments to income of $2558 based on the time you spent as a resident of New York City or Yonkers (i have not been a Yonkers resident)

Your federal adjustments below must equal $2558.

Could you please explain to me where this number ($2,558) came from and what to put in all the blank boxes?

My token number is: 1286375. I really appreciate your assistance in advance - thank you!

For the Allocate New York State Adjustments screen, you have to enter the following based upon your IT-203:

    • Description : STUDENT LOAN INT           2,500 (Federal Adj)
    • Description: SE TAX DEDUCTION                   58 (Federal Adj)

    This should equal 2,558.

The information you put in the NYC resident column depends on what percentage of these items were incurred while you lived in NYC. For example, if you accrued student loan interest expense evenly throughout the year, and you moved into NYC on 5/22/24, you'd allocate approximately 1,527 to the NYC column. This amount came from 223 days/365 x 2,500 student loan interest. Regarding the SE Tax Deduction for your business, I see this was 100% allocated to NY, so the full amount would be in the NYC column.

Hello! I'm in a similar situation where I lived in NYC for the first six months of 2024, then lived in Upstate NY for the remainder of the year. I've reached the "Allocate Federal Adjustments to Income" section of my state taxes where it's asking me to fill in the table and says "Your total federal adjustments below must equal $1,232." Where did they get $1,232 from and how should I allocate this? My token number is 1289368. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
