You'll need to determine if the income you're allocating is earned or unearned, as these are handled differently:

  • Earned income comes from employment, such as wages, salaries, tips, payment for services, and commissions
  • Unearned income comes from non-employment sources, such as interest, dividends, capital gains, social security, and IRA distributions

Select the type of income and check the instructions from the link below:

How do I allocate (split) income for a part-year state return?

Thank you for your response.

However, I am still unsure about which amount I should put in the IL amount and non-IL amount fields.

I don't understand what they mean.

To provide some context, I work in MO but live in IL. I moved to IL in August 2023. In 2023, I earned around $58000. Out of this, I earned $30000 while living in MO and $28000 while living in IL.

My question is, should I enter the amount I earned while living in IL in the Illinois amount field

and the amount I earned while living in MO in the non-Illinois amount field?

I appreciate any help you can provide.

You are filing a MO return for $28,000 of income and an IL return for $30,000 of income. On the IL return, if  $58,000 is showing in the total amount, you would enter $28,000 in the Other State Amount. If only the $30,000 is showing, enter zero.

The section you describe is for when you need a credit for tax paid to the other state on IL income. This does not describe your situation of all MO income.
